Fennec Foxes: Desert Survivalists with Iconic Ears

Over the past several weeks, we’ve discussed animals that dwell in some of the coldest climates on the planet. Perhaps it is because, where this writer is located, winter is giving way to the spring thaw. Whatever the case, it’s time we move away from the Arctic to a more arid, albeit no less comfortable climate; the desert.

There are many deserts on the planet but the one where we aim to find today’s elusive vulpine critter is the great Sahara Desert in Africa. The sandy-colored fennec fox might look cute and cuddly (and it is) but it is also one of the uniquely adapted animals on Earth. It’s enormous ears, keen senses, and singular behavior patterns have allowed this tiny, unassuming creature the ability to survive in one of the planet’s most extreme environments.

In this article, we will talk about the Sahara itself but we will do so in regards to how well this nocturnal hunter has managed to make due within the extremes of scorching days and frigid nights. Not only that, we will also explore how the fennec fox survives when water is limited and prey is scarce. So put on some sunscreen dear readers, we’re going on a fox hunt!

The Smallest Fox in the World

The pictures don’t exactly show it, but fennec foxes are actually surprisingly small for carnivores. They are the smallest of the fox family, with adults typically weighing somewhere between 2 and 3 pounds. They only grow from around 9 to 16 inches in length, though their fluffy tails add another 7 to 12 inches.

Besides their tails, the fennec fox’s ears take up a good chunk of morphological real estate. Fennec fox have ears can grow up to 6 inches long, making them proportionally the largest ears of any fox species we know about. And though these ears are what gives the fennec fox its distinctive appearance, they serve much more important functions in terms of helping the animal survive in one of the harshest environments on the globe.

The Purpose of Oversized Ears

That’s right, the big, adorable ears on the fennec fox are essential to its survival. How do they work, you may ask? Well, first, the ears help to dissipate heat. The thin skin of the fennec fox’s ears contains a dense network of blood vessels. As blood flows through these vessels, heat escapes into the surrounding air, helping cool the animal’s body, even in the 122-degree heat of the Sahara desert.

Considering that this temperature can be downright deadly for most living creatures, let alone furry ones, this dissipation of heat is one of the only thing keeping them alive at certain times of the day. As one might expect, these ears also grant the fennec fox some pretty incredible hearing. Fennec foxes eat insects, rodents, and desert reptiles and their ears allow them to detect the faint movements of those delicious morsels, even when they are deep beneath the sands.

Essentially, these ears act like sensitive radar dishes, letting the fox hunt efficiently, even in a landscape where food can be difficult to find.

A Nocturnal Desert Lifestyle

Just because the fennec fox can survive in the desert heat, does not mean they won’t do what they can to avoid it whenever possible. This is why fennec foxes are primarily nocturnal, meaning they spend most of the day resting underground and emerge from their burrows to hunt and explore at night.

Fennec burrows are often dug into sand dunes and, like those of Arctic foxes in the snow, contain multiple entrances and tunnels, providing the foxes with both ventilation and more than a few escape routes to protect them from predators. Living underground is also far cooler than living on the surface. This enables the foxes to conserve their water and energy until they need to use it to hunt at night.

A Flexible Diet

Despite preferring to feast on crunchable living critters, fennec foxes are actually omnivorous. They will not hesitate to eat eggs, birds, roots, or desert fruits when their insect, reptile, or rodent favorites aren’t as easily found. Food scarcity is part and parcel to life in the Sahara, so the foxes need to flexible. Their strong claws and teeth allow them to easily capture prey once they get a grip on it.

Living Without Much Water

Water is also hard to come by in the desert, but the fennec fox’s ability to survive with very little direct water has made it a true desert dynamo. Rather than drinking regularly, the flexible foxes obtain most of the moisture they need from the food they eat. Meat and veg is perfect hydration when rivers and rains are almost impossible to find. Additionally, fennec fox kidneys are also highly efficient at conserving water. This means they produce very little concentrated urine, so they don’t lose the life-giving water they need.

Predators of the Desert

Although fennec foxes are skilled survivors, they do not sit at the top of the desert food chain. Desert eagles, large owls, serpents, and larger canines like jackals, will all prey upon a fennec fox if given the opportunity. This is where the fennec’s burrows, senses, and reflexes all come in handy. They can detect danger early, avoid it, and hide away from it before a slowly hunter has a chance to know it’s all happened.

Conservation and Human Interaction

Currently, fennec foxes are not considered endangered, but they still face several challenges. Their habitat, once predictably hot, has changed some because of climate change. At the same time, human expansion and the wildlife trade has serious dents in local populations. Fennec foxes are cute, there’s no denying it, but that doesn’t mean that they make good pets. Nevertheless, their popularity within the exotic pet trade is hard to deny. Fortunately, new laws and regulations are working to help stymie this trade and leave the foxes where they belong; in their desert habitats.
