This reaction generates light with minimal heat, making it extremely efficient.

As rare as we made it sound, bioluminescence can be found across various species, including bacteria, fungi, insects, and, most famously, marine organisms. In the ocean, bioluminescent creatures can be found at all depths, thriving at the surface just as well as they do in the inky darkness of the deep sea.

How Do Bioluminescent Sea Creatures Produce Light?

Self-Generated Light

Some marine species, like the iconic anglerfish and certain species of jellyfish, produce bioluminescence on their own using the aforementioned enzymes luciferin and luciferase. These organisms have specialized cells or organs, called photophores, which house the chemicals necessary for light production.

Symbiotic Relationships

At the same time, many bioluminescent sea creatures rely on symbiotic relationships with light-producing bacteria. The Hawaiian bobtail squid is one such creature. This cephalopod hosts several colonies of bioluminescent bacteria in its mantle, offering the bacteria a safe environment in exchange for the light that the microorganisms provide.

Those fish are generally unaware of the rows of teeth waiting just beyond the lure, however, and most aren’t fast or clever enough to flee until it’s too late.

Deterring Predators

The vampire squid is one of the many species in possession of bodacious bioluminescence to use their living lights as a means of defense. These squids use their lights to startle or confuse predators, but not by just flashing colors at them; they can do that, sure, but they have another kind of gross trick up their mantle as well. When threatened, vampire squids release a special type of bioluminescent mucus at their predators, which floats in the water, creating a diversion and giving them time to escape. That mucus can also become stuck to a potential predator as well, which makes it harder for that predator to sneak up anyone else until it gets rid of the goo.

During mating season, these tiny squidlings gather in large groups near the surface of the sea, illuminating the water with vibrant blue light. This seasonal spectacle has become a tourist attraction in Japan, drawing visitors to the Toyama Bay.

The interesting thing about these displays is that, because their bioluminescent organs are arranged in intricate patterns, the squids can shift their bodies in such a way that allows them to create patterns. Those patterns are how the squids communicate and attract potential mates.

Deep-Sea Anglerfish

The very deepest parts of the ocean are home to a host of beautiful and hideous creatures. One of these, the deep-sea anglerfish, is an iconic example of bioluminescence. Comb Jellies (Ctenophora)

Many types of jellyfish exhibit some degree of bioluminescence. Though these animals are fairly simple, evolutionarily speaking, jellyfish generally have good reasons for putting on light displays. Comb jellies, in particular, are known for producing mesmerizing displays of bioluminescence. When disturbed, these gelatinous little guys emit light along their ciliary combs, creating rippling, rainbow-like patterns that light up the water. This is mostly used as a distraction, something that will hopefully confuse their would-be predators. Unfortunately, it often just makes them stand out more.

Dinoflagellates

Bioluminescence comes in all shapes and sizes and dinoflagellates are a good example of this. These tiny bioluminescent plankton play a key role in marine ecosystems, as do most of their minuscule cousins. When disturbed by movement, dinoflagellates emit flashes of blue-green light. When seen at a distance, this phenomenon creates stunning “glowing waves” or “sea sparkles.” This amazing display is usually observed along tropical coastlines.

Vampire Squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis)

Despite its fearsome name, the vampire squid does not suck blood. They don’t have any wings, fangs, or vampiric powers. Instead, this small and curious deep-sea creature is mostly harmless. It uses bioluminescent displays to confuse predators, before sometimes releasing glowing mucus that acts as a potent distraction.

Of all the ocean ecosystems where bioluminescence is present, the deep sea glows the brightest. This area is widely regarded as the most bioluminescent habitat on Earth, and for good reason. An estimated 90% of deep-sea organisms that live down there are capable of producing their own light.
