Yes, the ocean is home to some of the most extraordinary creatures on Earth, and among its most awe-inspiring inhabitants are marine mammals like dolphins, sea otters, seals, and whales. These animals have managed to defy the odds and evolved to live in and around the ocean, often in some of the deepest places on the planet. What’s even more fascinating is that many of these animals have evolved this way and still managed to maintain essential characteristics of mammals, such as breathing air, giving live birth, and feeding their young with milk.
Marine mammals can be found in seas and oceans all around the world, from the icy waters of the Arctic to the warm seas of the tropics. Within these habitats, these animals play crucial roles in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems.
In this article, we will dive down deep to discover the incredible diversity of marine mammals. For the purposes of this article, we will focusing on some of the most fascinating species that roam the seas. From the largest animal to ever live, the blue whale, to the acrobatic dolphins, and playful, adorable sea otters. Whales: The Giants of the Ocean
If you’ve ever stepped beneath the blue whale replica in the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, then you too may have been struck by the sheer enormity of these creatures. Why, even viewing a whale skeleton in say the New Bedford Whaling Museum in Massachusetts is equally breathtaking. Whales are perhaps the most iconic of all marine mammals. These mostly gentle giants are well known for their immense size and striking behaviors. The two main types of whales are baleen whales and toothed whales, both of which have adapted quite swimmingly to their way of life in the ocean.
Baleen Whales
The aforementioned giant of the seven seas, the blue whale, is a member of the baleen whale family. These animals are among the very largest on Earth, with some species reaching lengths of over 100 feet and weighing as much as 200 tons. Baleen whales do not have teeth, which might be why they aren’t considered among their cousins the toothed whales. Instead, these mighty giants possess baleen plates—thin, comb-like structures made of keratin—that allow them to filter their food from the water around them. This is because these whales primarily feed on small organisms, such as krill, plankton, and small fish, and big ol’ whale teeth would not be able to stop those tiny little buggers from escaping their gaping maw. Baleen whales eat by taking in a large mouthful of water and pushing the water out through their baleen plates, trapping any plankton-like food in the process.
Besides the blue whale, humpback whales, and gray whales are also members of this group. Despite being the very largest animal on our entire planet, blue whales primarily feed on tiny krill, consuming up to 4 tons of these crustaceans each day during feeding seasons. That is basically another whale’s worth of krill.
Humpback whales, while smaller, are famous for other reasons. Their complex songs and acrobatic behaviors have garnered spectator and scientific attention for untold centuries. Those songs, which can last for hours, are thought to play a role in communication and possibly mating rituals. Additionally, humpback whales are well-known for their long migrations, traveling thousands of miles from feeding grounds in polar regions to breeding areas in tropical waters like those surrounding Hawaii.
Toothed Whales
Toothed whales, on the other hand, possess teeth instead of baleen. They use these chompers to capture larger prey such as fish, squid, and other marine animals. Toothed whales include species like sperm whales, orcas, and yes, even dolphins. Some of the most recognizable of these whales are the ones that inspired Moby Dick himself; the sperm whale. These are among the largest toothed whales, with males reaching lengths of up to 67 feet. Sperm whales are known for their deep-diving abilities and peculiar diets, which include squid, including the giant squid that only dwell in the deepest parts of the ocean.
While toothed whales don’t usually sing, they do possess another fascinating sonic ability. Toothed whales have advanced echolocation abilities, meaning they use sound waves underwater to navigate their environment, communicate with other whales, and locate prey. This ability is particularly useful in the deep, dark waters where many of these animals hunt.
Dolphins: Intelligent and Playful Creatures
According to many scientific and behavioral experts, dolphins are one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet. When we talk about these beloved and very popular marine mammals, most of us imagine the common bottlenose dolphin, but there are actually more than. 40 distinct species of dolphin out there in the seven seas. These charming toothed whales are known for their playful behavior, intelligence, and social nature. When it comes to bottlenose dolphins, their cleverness and curiosity have often earned them a place in aquariums and marine parks. Like other toothed whales, dolphins have the ability to communicate using clicks and whistles as well as sonar.
Social Structure and Communication
Dolphins, like most cetaceans, are highly social creatures, living in groups called pods. These pods can range from just a few individuals to hundreds and are mostly composed of family members. Dolphins have been known to exhibit a range of social behaviors, including cooperative hunting, play, and even interspecies interactions. This is why dolphins are so popular in filk, TV, and marine parks, because we humans see a lot of ourselves in them. The truth is, the social structure dolphins evince is highly complex, and studies have shown that these creatures can form lifelong bonds with other individuals. These incredibly intelligent creatures have shown the ability to solve problems, use tools, and learn new behaviors. This is due to their brain size relative to the rest of them. Scientists have witnessed dolphins using sponges to protect their snouts while foraging on the seafloor, a behavior passed down through generations.
Dolphin communications and vocalizations are almost second-to-none. Dolphins use whistles, clicks, and other sounds to identify each other, coordinate hunting efforts, and communicate with other dolphins over long distances. Like most otters, sea otters can be fierce little fighters and voracious predators. Sea otters have dense fur, the thickest in the animal kingdom, in fact, and feed on shellfish, clams, and crabs. They accomplish this by using tools to crack those animals open and eating the inside. Found along the coasts of the northern Pacific Ocean, from Alaska down to California, sea otters are playful, intelligent, and absolutely necessary for the health of marine ecosystems.
Ecological Importance
The reason that sea otters play such a crucial role within marine habitats is that they almost single-handedly maintain the health of undersea kelp forests. These impressive coastal ecosystems are vital to the continued survival of local marine life. How do they do this, you may ask? Why, by eating sea urchins, of course! Sea urchins graze on kelp and will do so without surcease if left to their own devices. By controlling sea urchin populations, sea otters prevent potential overgrazing and help preserve kelp forests.
Without sea otters, sea urchin populations will explode, leading to the destruction of kelp forests and the collapse of an ecosystem provides home and food for a wide variety of species. This makes sea otters key players in marine conservation, and their presence or absence can significantly impact the health of coastal ecosystems.
The Struggle for Survival: Threats to Marine Mammals
We have seen that so many of these and other marine mammals are essential pieces of the ocean ecosystem as a whole. Possessed of amazing adaptations, these creatures represent some of the most captivating creatures in the natural world. Sadly, they face the same numerous threats that have already begun to endanger other ocean mainstays such as sharks and coral reefs. Climate change, pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction are all contributing to the decline of marine mammal populations, and nearly every one is directly out fault.
Climate Change and Its Impact
Climate change has been altering ocean temperatures, sea levels, and food availability, for decades, but it’s gotten a damn sight worse in the modern age. These changes have a profound effects on the lives and habitats of marine mammals. Warmer ocean temperatures are shifting the distribution of prey species, forcing some animals to travel further to find food, which can affect mammals like walruses and polar bears. As the ice disappears, these hardy, yet specialized animals are left without the critical habitat and food sources they need to survive.
Pollution
Plastic pollution, microplastics, oil spills, and chemical contaminants are all pollutants that poses a significant threat to marine mammals. Like sea turtles who mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, many marine mammals accidentally ingest plastic debris during the course of their feeding. These create whale-size garbage masses in their digestive tracts, blocking the release of waste and leading to malnutrition and eventual death. Toxic chemicals, such as mercury and PCBs, are equally deadly, and can accumulate at different stages of the marine food chain, eventually affecting the health of marine mammals and their ability to reproduce.
Overfishing
We already know that overfishing has caused our seafood industry to start to collapse, but it is also a massive threat to marine mammals, particularly those that rely on fish as a primary food source. Overfishing depletes fish stocks, leaving marine mammals with less food. These animals are also frequently caught up in nets as bycatch, which can result in injury or death for many species, even ocean mainstays like dolphins and whales.
